Magellan GPS Navigation System and the Ford F-150
Navigation Systems are a lot like DVRs (better known as TiVo). People who don't own them fail to understand why they're such a big deal, and those who have them can't live without them.
GPS technology actually consists of three separate components all working together. The three parts are the satellite constellation, the ground control network and the user equipment. By satellite constellation, we mean the satellites in low earth orbit which provide the signals and navigational data to the user's equipment. The ground control network continually monitors the health of the various satellites and the integrity of the signals received. The user equipment is designed to receive signals from the satellite constellation and computer.
Today's cars, SUV's and pick-up trucks come with a variety of extras, from passenger side air bags to the ubiquitous car alarms. Entertainment options range from high-end speakers and CD players to multiple DVD players. The GPS navigation system, however, forms the bridge between safety and entertainment features. While they're definitely entertaining, they can also become a must-have safety net in your travels.
GPS is used to calculate and display the position and speed of the user and determine where they are and how fast they are moving at any time. This makes GPS technology particularly valuable in automobiles, and rental car companies have been using GPS technology for many years now. Navigation in the commercial automobile fleet is newer, but it is steadily gaining popularity. GPS technology is particularly valuable in the event of an emergency like a car crash or breakdown, as it provides valuable assistance to emergency personnel responding to an accident and to tow trucks responding to a disabled vehicle. Refer to our navigation menu to find more information on truck GPS from our site.
The Global Positioning System is a navigation system originally developed by the US military which continues its' maintenance today. It is an integrated system of 24 satellites that orbit the earth and through the navigational process of triangulation can pinpoint a position anywhere on earth where a receiver is located. During the 1980's the government opened up the use of the GPS to the private sector. It is widely expected to become the next personal utility in the same way that cellular phones have over the past couple of decades.
Global Positioning Satellite navigation systems can replace all the maps in your glove compartment and ensure that you arrive at your destination on time. GPS navigation systems are equipped with mapping software and can give you driving directions, show you alternate routes if you're stuck in a traffic jam, and can help you negotiate a new city. While you're on the road, a navigation system can also guide you to the nearest gas stations, restaurants, and other points of interest.
GPS technology actually breaks down into two distinct categories - a Standard Positioning Service (SPS) which is used for general civilian uses, and a Precise Positioning Service (PPS) which is used primarily by the Department of Defense and U.S. allies. Of course this precise military positioning will eventually filter down to the general public, just as GPS technology did originally.
There are many accessories available for GPS navigation systems. You can, for example, buy software, holders to mount your system to your dashboard or windshield, memory cards, cigarette lighter adapters, antennas, and Bluetooth.
Pick-Up Truck GPS navigation is a special form of navigation, as it is not you who navigates, but computer-software that tells you how to travel to your destination. And frankly spoken, it does the job much better than you ever could. Systems with voice output are a great help as they do not create the slightest distraction for the driver. Everybody could use one and everybody can use one, because you really do not need any special skill to operate these car GPS systems.
Magellan® is the consumer brand of Thales Navigation, one of the world's leading innovators of navigation and positioning solutions with operations worldwide. What to REALLY expect from a GPS Tracking System
GPS Tracking is taking the corporate world, and this is a wave that is growing more and more everyday. However, there is still a lot of lack of knowledge when companies decide to go into this technology. Most of the times, companies will look for a simple solution that shows their vehicles in a map, but after a few months they start to realize the real force of these technologies when applied to logistic processes, just to mention one.
This is Part 1 of a series of 10 articles in which I will present how a GPS Tracking system can REALLY make a difference in a company's performance. In this article I will start to define some of the terminology and concepts needed to have a fair understanding of GPS Tracking.
There are many applications for the GPS TRACKING technology that can be divided into two main groups: NAVIGATION and TRACKING.
Navigation is related to devices that are installed in the vehicles and that provide on-board navigation information. The user will usually enter a destination address and will start receiving audio and visual directions on how to arrive to that place. Samples of these devices are seen in almost every computer store, and the most recognized brands are Garmin, TomTom, and others.
Tracking is related to devices installed in the vehicles that send information about the vehicle to computer programs where the information is processed and presented to users in maps and reports. The information sent by these devices includes at least the position in terms of Latitude and Longitude, the speed, the direction (north, south, east, etc.), the date and the time. Other devices include more sophisticated information such as Ignition status, doors status, on-board engine diagnostic, etc. Samples of companies that provide this type of products are also multiple, and can be found by tons with any search in a search engine like Google.
The GPS Tracking Solutions are usually provided as web applications, more than applications that have to be downloaded and installed in users' computers. And as mentioned before, there is a wealth of options to pick from. Many companies will offer to their users Tracking solutions that can be accessed via web, and that allows to keep track of the vehicles of the companies in a map and in several reports.
Once a company or an individual decides to go into this technology, the first question that has to be solved is: What type of GPS System I need? Is it a Tracking System? Or a Navigation System? It is very common to start shopping around without a clear understanding of what is needed. The orientation of these articles will be GPS Tracking Solutions. GPS Navigation will be subject of a future article. And this first article severs as a starting point to understand and identify what the needs are on each particular case.
In the next article I will discuss some additional terms related to GPS Tracking and will start going into its applications in the day to day processes.

GPS Vehicle Fleet Tracking in Business Today
GPS Vehicle Fleet Tracking isn't just for the big businesses anymore. Businesses with fleets as small as 5 vehicles are using GPS vehicle fleet tracking and finding themselves making back their investment within a short period of time. Fortunately, technology changes are making it more affordable for these smaller businesses to use this GPS fleet tracking to serve their needs.
Global Positioning Systems (GPS) use a network of satellites beaming time-stamped signals to receivers on the surface of the Earth. By measuring the delay between when the signal was sent and when it arrived from three different satellites, you can isolate the coordinates of any receiver on the surface of the earth, with a precision that goes down to inches for military receivers, and about two years for commonly available civilian gear.
GPS equipment has become more and more common as cell phone technology has made it more portable and easier to use. There are many benefits to equip your fleets with GPS tracking technology.
Firstly, GPS equipment, and the monitoring software for it, allows you to have precise locations of delivery vehicles. This makes it possible to route technicians and repairmen and delivery personnel more efficiently, and to let customers know, nearly in real time, about any potential delays in routing or delivery.
Second, because of more accurate data gathered on the movements of vehicles in your fleet, you have better control over mileage, proactive maintenance, and fuel economy. It's a lot easier to keep track of fuel economy when you can factor in idle times.
In similar vein, you now have an accurate record of where every vehicle in your fleet has traveled over the course of a given day. Your payroll expenses will go down; when you have an accurate log of where every vehicle is at every hour of the day, you can cross reference it against employee time sheets for hours spent driving for reimbursement.
Likewise, most vehicle-tracking GPS software allows you to set a "virtual fence" which lets you tell when a vehicle has gone "out of zone" - this is good for tracking if a vehicle has made an unscheduled detour, or to track it down if it's stolen.
Finally, more and more GPS tracking software can work with a public web interface. It can be a great marketing coup for a taxicab company to have a web site that shows, as an overlay on Google maps, the location of all cabs reporting in, whether they have a fare and so on - this makes it much easier to schedule a cab pickup, or run a bus route with accurate time stamps for how far ahead or behind a bus is on its scheduled rounds.
The previous benefits listed make businesses look into investing into GPS fleet tracking as a solution to keeping costs down; it's estimated that the more accurate timekeeping versus payroll expenses can cause a typical small business with a fleet of company vehicles to save enough money to pay for the installation and software in under 90 days.

GPS Fleet Tracking System: How Does Vehicle Fleet Tracking Improve Your Business?
GPS or global position system utilizes satellite signals to track location. This system has become so precise that it can pinpoint an actual location to within yards. GPS has many uses, one of which as a GPS fleet tracking system. There are several benefits of using GPS for vehicle fleet tracking.
The GPS tracking system is used with software that a dispatcher accesses from the computer. This will allow better dispatch for service technicians or delivery drivers. There are usually delays when dispatching is done using a map and judgment of the dispatcher. With the aid of the GPS fleet tracking system, dispatches are made on a timely basis thus improving quality of service.
GPS system works in most areas including metropolitan and rural areas. Using the tracking system to dispatch employees and define routes will help to keep windshield time to a minimum. It avoids drivers passing each other en-route, cutting down on fuel consumption and wasted time.
Another great benefit of using the GPS fleet tracking system is to help drivers in navigation. Without GPS tracking, drivers can waste a lot of time driving in the wrong direction, looking for streets, asking for directions or stopping to check the map. A GPS fleet tracking system provides real time navigation for the driver, thus saving time and fuel expenses.
GPS fleet tracking system can be used to ensure that your staff is doing their jobs. It can track drivers so you know their whereabouts during working hours and acts as a deterrent to those who tend to shirk.
Besides supplying real time information, GPS fleet tracking system can provide reports of historical tracking which can be beneficial to staff. If there are any complaints from customers about time of arrival or the length of time spent at the location, these concerns can be verified from past record of GPS tracking.
GPS fleet tracking system reduces the risks of vehicle theft and employee fraud. If you are utilizing it in your fleet management, you should be able to negotiate a discount with your vehicle insurance provider.
GPS fleet tracking is a great technology that helps any business to improve productivity, reduce costs and increase profitability. It is not only used for managing mobile assets but also employees in any service, delivery or sales organization. Although initial capital investment in a tracking system is high, the benefits far outweigh the costs in the long run. Some GPS suppliers offer leasing or negotiable payment installment.

GPS Tracking For Children: What You Need To Know
GPS or global positioning system is a tracking system that can keep track of location via the use of satellite systems. A GPS tracking device can easily be attached to a car, person, backpack, etc.
What is GPS tracking for children?
GPS tracking for children uses a lightweight tracking device that can attach to a backpack or clip onto pants. Some GPS tracking devices for children are worn like watches or even attached to the shoes. The GPS tracking for children allows parents to easily find a child who gets lost or wanders away. It can also be used to help locate a child that is abducted.
How does GPS tracking work?
The GPS utilizes satellite-based navigation techniques. There are a series of satellites used for this purpose which were put into orbit by the U.S. Department of Defense. The signals emitted are specially coded so that the receivers can process the information and distinguish it from other information. GPS satellites are constantly circling the earth, providing precise information. The system can take the information from the signal and calculate the exact location of the user.
GPS tracking is done through various companies equipped for this service. The GPS device is purchased and programmed appropriately. Parents subscribe to a monthly user service. The fees for these services vary. The tracking device is attached to the child or kept in the child’s possession and turned on. The system can track people to within about several yards so it is quite accurate.
What can I find out from the tracking system?
That depends on the type of tracking service you get. There are some service plans that offer several “trackings” per month while other plans may offer unlimited trackings. Some can give you the tracking information through the internet or by telephone while others may provide software for your computer so that you can do the tracking yourself. Most tracking systems offer optional reports so you can see the activity on the tracking device. Real time tracking is typically more expensive.
Most parents use GPS tracking system to find a child that is lost. The technology is able to locate the street or actual address of an individual with incredible accuracy. Parents can use tracking software to find the location or call up the tracking company who can quickly provide details of the location.
What are the negatives?
For one thing, GPS tracking systems for children are expensive. Expect to pay anywhere from $150 onwards for the device itself. Monthly service plans may cost between $25 and $100 a month. Multiple devices (for several children) definitely cost more.
GPS tracking system for children can give parents a peace of mind. However, some children, especially as they become older, may not want to use the device and they may simply turn it off. Nevertheless, it should be considered a valuable parenting tool that is particularly well suited to younger children. Don’t use the device instead of good old-fashioned parenting. Always provide ample age-appropriate supervision to your children.

Computer Time Synchronisation Using GPS
The Global Positioning System (GPS) consists of a number of orbiting satellites that provide precise positioning information for navigation purposes. Positioning is calculated by using accurate timing information and triangulation. However, the accurate timing system can also be used for computer network time synchronisation purposes. Each orbiting satellite has an onboard atomic clock that can provide highly precise time. This article describes how precise GPS timing information can be utilised to provide network timing via GPS NTP servers. It also discusses the type of equipment required to process GPS signals for time and frequency applications.
Time is referenced to Universal Coordinated Time (UTC), which is the same worldwide and does not vary with time zones. The GPS satellites continuously transmit precise time information. GPS time is not affected by leap seconds and is currently 14 seconds ahead of UTC time. GPS time can easily be adjusted to provide UTC time for computer network time synchronisation. The GPS satellites broadcast a very weak low-power radio signal. The signal has two frequencies, L1 and L2. L1 is intended as a civilian GPS band broadcast at 1575.42 MHz. L2 is not currently in operation but promises future stronger signal transmissions. The signal travels in a straight line and can pass through clouds, glass and plastics but is blocked by objects such as metal and brickwork. Therefore, ideally, a GPS antenna requires a good view of the sky. The ideal location for a GPS antenna is on rooftop with a good view of the sky. If it is impractical to locate a roof-mounted antenna, installation on the side of a building can be adequate.
The GPS system provides a subscription-free accurate timing resource. Many computer networks utilise the GPS clock as an accurate timing reference for computer synchronisation. Precise GPS NTP server systems utilise GPS reference clocks as an external synchronisation source. The GPS system can supply highly precise time and frequency information accurate to a couple of nanoseconds. This accuracy is generally more than enough for most computer network timing applications.
Most GPS receivers transmit time and positioning information in a serial format using the standard NMEA protocol. Information is transmitted as sentences of character strings. Additionally, a highly accurate timing pulse is generated which marks the beginning of each second. This timing pulse can be converted to a RS232 signal level and fed into a RS232 control line interrupt to provide a precise timing reference. When the timing pulse is combined with the NMEA output sentences, a very accurate timing reference becomes available for use by NTP servers or computer timing equipment.

Is a GPS Fleet Tracking System Right for My Business?
You've heard the stories from your peers or competitors about how they are saving money after installing a GPS Fleet Tracking system - and now you are wondering if the time has come for you to get a GPS Fleet Tracking system for your fleet - is it worth the investment?
I've been gratified and amazed time after time over the last seven years as hundreds of my customers have experienced immediate savings and control of their fleets - they all say the same thing - "...I wish I'd done this sooner!".
When I first started installing GPS Fleet Tracking systems back at the "turn of the century" the early adopters felt like pioneers, and wanted to be the first on their block to have this cutting-edge technology. The majority of Fleet Owners waited. They missed out while their competitors saved big. Amazingly, as of this writing less than ten percent of fleet owners have installed a GPS Fleet Tracking system. Why? Simple - too much confusion. Fleet owners are bombarded with direct mail ads and telemarketing calls from salespeople selling everything from battery operated devices to GPS enabled cell phones. An in-vehicle, real time system is the only real choice. The other systems will not give you the reliable, timely information you need and are more trouble than they are worth. Besides that, the in-vehicle solutions have become very affordable and easy to install and - most importantly - almost always pay for themselves within their first ninety days!
Is a GPS Fleet Tracking system right for your business? Try to identify areas in which you are experiencing inefficiencies or un-necessary costs where a GPS Fleet Tracking system can have an immediate and lasting impact:
1. Do your drivers take their vehicles home with them? If so, are they permitted to use your vehicles for personal use? Fleet Owners are astounded when they see immediate savings on fuel, miles driven and overtime while simultaneously reducing liability as a result of unauthorized use and speeding.
2. Are your drivers paid by the hour? Do they clock in and out with a paper time card, noting the time that they start and end their day on the "honesty" system? In general, I've learned that most employees are not "out to get" their employers, but it is hard not to fudge the time card a little. Saving only ten minutes per day of time card abuse will easily pay for your system all by itself!
3. Are you concerned that your employees are doing side jobs you are not getting paid for? With a GPS Fleet Tracking system you'll get paid for every job performed by your assets.
4. Are you concerned about potential liabilities if your drivers are speeding or driving recklessly? With GPS you are virtually riding along with every driver, all day every day. Your drivers will know it and will think twice before putting your assets at risk!
These are just a few of the many ways that a GPS Fleet Tracking system can help you to - simply stated - keep MORE of the money already flowing through your company for YOURSELF! Over the past seven years I've learned that (understandably) fleet owners simply will not purchase a system unless they are absolutely convinced that it will save them much more than it costs. Once again, most Fleet Owners find that their GPS Fleet Tracking system pays for itself within the first ninety days.
I know, you still have some concerns about how to break the news to your drivers - that's normal. Your employees are like your family, right? I've learned that your best employees will embrace the system, and yes - the ones that have something to hide will fight it. In fact, you may even lose a few people - but you'll be better off without them.
As soon as your system is up and running you'll kick yourself for waiting this long - but you will also be thrilled with the increase in efficiencies and decrease in costs to manage your fleet.

Find and Catch Those Pesky Fish with a Garmin 240 Fish Finde
Garmin 240 Fish Finder Depthfinder with Transducer - a review
The lakes that I normally fish are deep and quite rocky, and I have been delighted with the performance of the Garmin 240 Fish Finder, which gives a clear picture of what lies below. The image of the bottom shows great detail, and if it is showing fish presence then you can guarantee they will be there. It does a good job of indicating non-fishlines as well. It is at its best when performing in deep water, but perhaps isn't as impressive in shallow water.
The Depth Control feature works well in continuing to monitor changes in water depth automatically while the Whiteline feature determins bottom hardness well. The screen is easy to read, even in the dark when the backlight comes into its own. You can see the controls easily.
The Garmin 240 Fish Finder is packed full of features for less money than my old Lowrance, while the features are easily compatible."
Features
The 240-by-240 pixel high-definition display gives you a clear picture of fish, thermoclines, structure and bottom surface. By using various shades of gray, the Fishfinder 240 paints a beautiful picture, leaving little to interpretation.
Operational features include a unique control bar that identifies the most commonly used fishing settings. So without hunting through complicated menus, you can quickly configure and save the settings you want. As lake conditions change, you can fine- tune your Fishfinder 240 on the fly.
Garmin's engineering edge includes See-ThruTM technology, a Garmin exclusive. This allows the Garmin 240 Fish Finder to hear both weak and strong signals simultaneously so you to identify fish returns under the toughest conditions: suspended in thermoclines or even hiding near structure.
Another exclusive feature is Depth Controlled Gain (DCGTM), which automatically adjusts fishfinder sensitivity according to depth, not echo intensity like other fishfinders. The result is a much more detailed and accurate picture of bottom structure.
And we've often heard stories about folks who have found a great fishing spot one day, only to be unable to find it again the next day. With the Garmin 240 Fish Finder that's never a problem again.

Vehicle Tracker: Never Losing Track Again
Vehicle tracker, also known as GPS vehicle tracking system, is a device that uses satellite signals to track vehicles. The device is placed inside of the vehicle, allowing either real-time or passive monitoring of its location.
How a vehicle tracker works
Vehicle tracker emits a signal that is picked up via satellite and conveyed to a monitoring system. A subscription service to the tracking company allows you to get reports and access to real-time monitoring displays.
There are two types of vehicle trackers available. One type offers passive tracking. A monitoring device is placed in the vehicle and data can be retrieved later to determine where the vehicle has been and the mileage driven. The other type is real time tracking, which is more extensive. It allows the vehicle's location to be monitored on a computer while it is being driven. Special software is loaded onto the computer to allow you to receive real-time information on the location, speed and direction of travel. Typically these movements are shown on a gridded map, making it user-friendly.
Why use a vehicle tracker
Anti-theft device – One of the major concerns of new vehicle owners is theft. With the use of a tracker, your vehicle can be quickly located if it is stolen. A deterrent to criminals, you can display the sticker, which indicates your vehicle is equipped with GPS. GPS - Why I Feel Safer
Whether you're an old pro at driving or you're just gearing up for your first long trip, a GPS unit can be worth its weight in gold! GPS stands for "global positioning system," and with one in your car or in your bag, you'll always know where in the world you are.
A GPS uses the coordinates from Air Force satellites to triangulate its location; after the GPS receiver figures out how far it is each from each satellite, it can figure out your location within about ten to twenty-four meters. With this powerful tool at your disposal, you'll never have to worry about bad directions and highway detours again!
There are plenty of jokes about people not wanting to ask for directions or people who give poor directions, but getting assaulted while asking for directions is no laughing matter. Far too often, motorists are assaulted or targeted when asking for directions in an unfamiliar area or while they are distracted.
When you ask for directions from a stranger, you are showing that person that you don't know where you are, that you are unfamiliar with the area, and that you are possibly disoriented. When we get lost, we are confused and frustrated, and there is a good chance that our internal warning systems are not working; we may end up asking for directions from people who make that internal warning bell go off.
Even if you don't ask for directions, fumbling with a map can be a dead giveaway. How many times have you gotten out of your car to spread the map out for better visibility? When you are distracted with your map, you are extremely vulnerable. Having a paper map out and fumbling with it makes you a target for would be thieves or dangerous individuals.
There are also places where you just don't want to get lost. Several cities have bad neighborhoods that are easy to stumble into but harder to get out of, especially if you are driving in the dark. A GPS unit can make sure you get to where you are going without having to spend a stressful few hours trying to get out of a dangerous part of town.
Even if you don't do a lot of city driving, there are still areas where you want to avoid getting lost. If you've ever driven cross-country, you know that some states, like Texas and Oklahoma, go on forever without a lot in the way of landmarks. You can lose hours of time and hundreds of miles before you figure out that you are lost and running out of gas on a desolate part of the highway is highly problematic. If you have young children in the car, this situation can become quite dangerous; children especially become dehydrated easily.
If you are driving in an area that you are not familiar with, a GPS unit can be instrumental in getting you where you need to go. Don't forget that because the highway commissions are constantly building new highways and closing others for construction or repairs that the maps you buy at gas stations are not always reliable. When you are driving in an unfamiliar area, there is a chance that you will be forced off the highway and into a confusing residential area. When this happens, a GPS unit can help you get back on track, and in fact, might have been able to find you a route that you wouldn't have had to leave in the first place.
Much as cell phones have become part of our world, GPS units are quickly becoming an essential part of travel. They are compact convenient, and they can make your driving experience a lot safer. You can purchase one for a teenager who's not so sure about the driving geography of her own town, or you can purchase one for yourself if you're going to be driving in an area that you are not familiar with. For both individual travel and family vacations, a GPS can give you a great deal of peace of mind.
No matter how old you are, or where you are planning on driving, a GPS unit can make sure you get there safely. When you purchase a GPS unit for your car, you're ensuring that you never have to worry about getting lost or feel the anxiety of getting lost again!

How does a GPS Tracking System work?
GPS tracking is a way of working out exactly where something is. A GPS tracking system, for example, may be placed in a vehicle, on a cell phone or on special GPS devices which can either be fixed or portable units.
GPS (Global Positioning System) works by giving information on exact location. It can also track the movement of a vehicle or person. So, for example, a GPS tracking system can be used by a company to monitor the route and progress of a delivery truck, it can be used by parents to check on the location of their child, or it can be used by drivers as an aid to navigation.
A GPS tracking system uses the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) network. This network incorporates a range of satellites that use microwave signals which are transmitted to GPS devices to give information on location, vehicle speed, time and direction. So, a GPS tracking system can potentially give both real-time and historic navigation data on any kind of journey.
A GPS tracking system can work in various ways. From a commercial perspective, GPS devices are generally used to record the position of vehicles as they make their journeys. Some systems will store the data within the GPS tracking system itself (known as passive tracking) and some send the information to a centralized database or system via a modem within the GPS system unit on a regular basis (known as active tracking).
A passive GPS tracking system will monitor location and will store its data on journeys based on certain types of events. So, for example, this kind of GPS system may log data such as turning the ignition on or off or opening and closing doors. The data stored on this kind of GPS tracking system is usually stored in internal memory or on a memory card which can then be downloaded to a computer at a later date for analysis. In some cases the data can be sent automatically for wireless download at predetermined points/times or can be requested at specific points during the journey.
An active GPS tracking system is also known as a real-time system as this method automatically sends the information on the GPS system to a central computer or system in real-time as it happens. This kind of system is usually a better option for commercial purposes such as fleet tracking and individual vehicle tracking as it allows the company to know exactly where their vehicles are, whether they are on time and whether they are where they are supposed to be during a journey. This is also a useful way of monitoring the behavior of employees as they carry out their work and of streamlining internal processes and procedures for delivery fleets.
Real-time tracking is also particularly useful from a security perspective as it allows vehicle owners to pinpoint the exact location of a vehicle at any given time. So, if there is a robbery, the owner of a vehicle will know exactly where the vehicle was when the robbery took place. And, the GPS tracking system in the vehicle may then be able to help police work out where the vehicle was taken to if it was stolen. Many fleet operators find that having a GPS tracking system in place actually works as an extra security deterrent for this reason.
